How SafeSale works

Buy and sell, step by step.

Agree on an offer, choose how to pay, then meet and confirm the exchange together.

Pickup & deliveryArrange it together. SafeSale does not deliver.

SafeSale does not provide pickup or delivery services. The buyer and seller—including stores—must agree directly on pickup or delivery, timing, location, and any delivery costs before completing the handoff.

Any delivery costs are separate from SafeSale fees. If a store offers delivery, it is the store’s own service, not a SafeSale service.

How it works

  1. Browse or prepare a listing

Search by category and area, nearby or across Canada. To sell, add photos, the item’s condition, price and location.

  2. Verify your identity

We check the seller’s identity when they publish and the buyer’s when they make an offer. A successful check normally lasts 12 months, unless a new check is required sooner.

  3. Agree on the offer and payment

The seller reviews the buyer’s offer. Once it is accepted, the buyer chooses a payment option and reviews the exact fees before continuing.

  4. Meet and inspect the item

Contact details unlock after the required identity and payment checks. Arrange a public meeting, inspect the item and follow the deadline shown in your transaction.

  5. Confirm the handoff

After the exchange, the buyer and seller each confirm their own part in SafeSale. When processing is complete, the transaction and receipt appear in your Activity history.

Two ways to pay

The item price and SafeSale fees are handled differently for each option.

Pay in person

Pay the seller directly for the item. Pay your SafeSale fee in the app or on the website.

Payment details
  • For private sales, buyer and seller each pay their own SafeSale fee. Required checks must pass before handoff contacts unlock.
  • The buyer pays the item price directly to the seller at the meeting using their agreed payment method.
  • SafeSale processes the service fees only. The item payment stays between buyer and seller.

Pay through SafeSale

Pay for the item and your SafeSale fee at checkout. Seller proceeds transfer after completion and checks.

Payment details
  • For new transactions, the item price and buyer fee are charged at checkout. Older transactions keep the terms shown in their payment screen.
  • Seller proceeds transfer after completion, subject to payment and account checks.
  • A private seller’s fee is deducted from proceeds. Follow payout status in your account.

Before you get started

What are the SafeSale fees?

For private sales using Pay in person, each participant pays CA$10 for an item priced from CA$50 to CA$500, or 2.5% above CA$500. For Pay through SafeSale, each participant’s fee is 3.5%, with a CA$10 minimum; the seller’s fee comes out of the proceeds. Items can be priced up to CA$5,000. Your exact fees are shown before payment.

When will I be charged?

Submitting an offer does not charge your card. With Pay in person, your SafeSale fee is charged when you complete the fee payment; the item is paid separately at the meeting. For new Pay through SafeSale transactions, the item price and buyer fee are charged at checkout. Older transactions retain their original terms.

How long do we have to meet?

New transactions complete after both confirmations or seven days after contact details unlock, unless a problem requires review. Report any problem before the deadline. Older transactions retain their original deadlines and completion rules.

What if we need to cancel?

Open the transaction and report the issue, or contact SafeSale Support with your transaction number. Do not confirm a handoff that has not happened. Any cancellation or refund depends on the payment stage and the review outcome; a refund is not automatic.

What if the buyer or seller does not show up?

Report the no-show from the transaction or contact SafeSale Support. Keep the transaction number and relevant messages. Report the problem before the deadline so it can be reviewed before automatic completion. One participant’s confirmation never counts as the other person’s confirmation.
